Almonds are the seeds of the fruit of the almond tree. Thought to have originated in Western Asia and North Africa, they are one of the oldest nuts and have been written about in many historical texts, including the Bible.
Today, 80% of the world's supply of almonds comes from California.

Like most nuts, almonds are naturally cholesterol free, gluten free, low in saturated fat and are a low glycemic-index food. They are good source of protein, fiber, healthy fats, vitamins & minerals and particularly:

Compared to other tree nuts, almonds are highest in fiber, protein, calcium, vitamin E, riboflavin and niacin.

In a nutshell, almonds are a powerhouse of a variety of nutrients that supports overall health. They have been widely studied and are known to promote a healthy heart mostly due due to their cholesterol & blood pressure lowering effects; their high fiber content supports the digestive tract and promotes a feeling of satiety and fullness making them a great addition to weight management diets. They have also have been associated with positive effects in controlling diabetes.
Because of the antioxidants in almonds, these nuts can last a very long time if stored properly. However, due to their high fat content, they are likely to turn rancid if not kept in the appropriate conditions. Packaged raw almonds can be stored unopened in a cool, dark place for up to two years. Unopened roasted almonds can be stored under the same conditions up to one year. Both will last even longer if refrigerated or placed in the freezer. Once packaged almonds are opened, be sure to put them in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag with the air squeezed out and store in a cool, dry, dark place (ideally in the refrigerator) and use within three months.
